What’s Sustainability and Why is it Crucial

In 2021, awareness on how to be sustainable and protect our environment has become widespread. Although, as great as that sounds, not as many people have implemented sustainable habits. So, in light of current events happening in Lebanon, embodying a sustainable lifestyle may actually help us in the long run.

What is Sustainability?

The definition of sustainability is the process of avoiding using up resources that lead to the depletion of natural resources in order to be able preserve these resources for future generations.

Sustainable practices support environmental, human and financial wellbeing. Sustainability is what everyone needs right now. Since as of 2018, landfills had received 12.2 million tons of wood, making up 8.3 percent of all MSW (municipal solid waste) landfilled that year. This is what we should be aiming to cut down on: wood, plastic and metal that ends up in landfills and stays there for hundreds of years; this is damaging our environment more so than we would like.

Sustainability and Recycling

Recycling and sustainability are essentially the same thing, with recycling being a way to improve the economic and environmental sustainability, it’s basically a small branch in the tree of sustainable living.

Sustainability is the importance of being able to consume natural resources while still being able to maintain the balance of our eco-system.

With that being said, let’s dive in.

How important is sustainability?

Sustainability is being able to leave the next generation in better hands, it’s being able to replenish all the damage we’ve done to the earth and still be able to live comfortably without depriving ourselves from any resources we may need.

Sustainability is being able to leave the next generation in better hands, it’s being able to replenish all the damage we’ve done to the earth and still be able to live comfortably without depriving ourselves from any resources we may need.

Sustainability has the power to end poverty and hunger, improve the health of land, air and sea as well as educate every future generation coming after us about the importance of sustainable living.

We all know the importance of being able to protect our environment. So, we’re no strangers to being able save energy/reduce waste during our daily lives but, we need to do more.

For example, instead of keeping things on standby, we can turn them off completely. Walking instead of taking the bus or a car where we can keep our carbon emissions low, especially in Lebanon where w need to take these steps to be able to keep up with the amount of consumption. These steps also save us money, not to mention, walking instead of driving will save you gas as well, something we all need at the moment.

Minor changes in your life on a day to day basic can make the biggest difference.

A sustainable future

As of yet, no one knows how our future is going to be like especially when looking at it from a sustainable point of view. In the past 70 years, we have experience unprecedented growth and a massive increase in our power needs, putting a huge strain on Earth’s resources.

It is vital that we be able to reduce the damage being done daily and be able to protect our planet not only for the sake of the Earth but for the sake and wellbeing of our future as we all may be facing dire consequences if we are not careful.

Even the smallest act of saving energy and reducing waste is big enough to influence those around you.

So go for a walk instead of a drive, get a reusable bag when grocery shopping to reduce plastic waste and start turning off electronics you don’t use to save some power. These will change your life in the smallest way but will impact our planet in the greatest way possible.

Influence your friends and family to live a cleaner life so we can have a brighter future.
